Mission: The Plastics Team works on educating the public about plastic pollution. We are dedicated to eliminating single-use plastics such as bags, straws, drink containers, etc. We meet when necessary, seeking ways to influence elected officials, especially Iowa’s state legislators. We also make reusable bags to hand out at events and tabling. We organize sewing days and members come to sew or cut fabric. We can always use help. We have fun and would love to include you.
100Grannies against plastic: reduce, reuse, recycle
Resources
The plastics team is making available resources that can help people reduce, reuse, and recycle plastics.
- This article from a February 2024 Consumer Reports discusses how prevalent plastics are in our food and elsewhere.
- Becky R. of 100Grannies has spent considerable time and energy trying out products that offer an alternative to using plastics. Her list is available here.
Activities
Deb S. and Becky R. gave a program for ARC on Monday, Feb 27, 2023 for a group of disabled young people. They showed them a short Granny PowerPoint and then talked about what each of them can do to eliminate some wasteful plastic items from their lives. Deb and Becky gave each participant a reusable Granny bag and did a “sorting” activity – what items are trash, recyclable, and compostable.
The Plastics Team has sewn hundreds of recycled cloth bags and distributed them at events for community members to use in place of single-use plastic bags.
