The Action Team is a way to become involved with a variety of get-out-there-and do-something actions and events. We work well together and have fun as well as providing a visible and potent impact on the community and beyond. Welcome to all who are passionate about preserving a just and livable future for all life on planet Earth, and wish to choose from a variety of actions and activities to make a difference.
The Diet and Climate Team provides education on how food production and dietary choices, especially animal products, affect climate change.
The Education Team plans and presents the Grannies’ annual October Film Series and the March Lecture Series for the public. This can involve previewing a number of films for consideration. We also plan and present storytelling activities at our area’s public libraries. We are often involved in tabling activities at environmental events. We present books to school libraries every year. A series of “Granny Green” books for young readers has been published, written and illustrated by members.
Our team encourages change in our paradigm of beauty. Let us move away from a perfectly manicured look; toward appreciation for the benefits of diverse lawns. We are a local partner to a statewide public education initiative, Good Neighbor Iowa, of the University of Northern Iowa’s Center for Energy & Environmental Education. This program aims to reduce unnecessary urban pesticide in order to protect child health, water quality, pets, pollinators and biodiversity. https://goodneighboriowa.org/
The Plastics Team works on educating the public about plastic pollution. We are dedicated to eliminating single-use plastics such as bags, straws, drink containers, etc. We meet when necessary, seeking ways to influence elected officials, especially Iowa’s state legislators. We also make reusable bags to hand out at events and tabling. We organize sewing days and members come to sew or cut fabric. We can always use help. The Steering Committee is composed of 4-6 members and is self-organizing. The Steering Committee sets the agenda for the regular monthly meetings. One member facilitates the monthly Granny meetings another records and distributes the minutes. The Steering Committee members also check and respond to the Grannies’ email account. Emails of interest or importance to all members are forwarded to the entire membership.
This team oversees the website. The goal of the website is to inform members and the public of 100Grannies mission, activities, and events. We are fairly active currently in updating the website. So stay tuned!
The Welcome Team meets with each new member to provide an orientation and information on the history, the current activities, and how to get involved with the 100Grannies.
