Mission: This team keeps tabs on legislative issues, especially when the Legislature is in session.  When action is called for, we coordinate with the Action Team. We also keep the Granny membership informed about what is going on with other environmental groups such as the Iowa Citizens Climate Lobby and ICCI (Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement).  We encourage members to contact elected officials on matters of environmental concerns.

If you wish to be included on the Legislative emails sent out during the session (usually January to April) please contact Pat B. at legislative100grannies@gmail.com  to ask to be included in the emails.

LEGISLATIVE INFORMATION 2023

Your state representative and senator need to know your opinion on the issues, and that you are paying attention to their votes.  Tell them you are a climate voter.  Call, email, or write to them on the issues we outline each week in the Legislative Update. This is important:  Build a relationship with elected officials ahead of time so they know you are one of their constituents and you care about these important matters.

If legislative forums held by your legislator are in-person, we caution you to use your judgment on whether to attend based on your situation and whether you feel safe. Encourage your lawmakers to hold virtual or hybrid forums so all their constituents can participate and have their voices heard.

Public officials at all levels of government are required to conduct the public’s business in public with very few exceptions. Click here to view a YouTube of a program hosted by the Education Committee of the League of Women Voters of Johnson County (LWVJC), and cosponsored by the Iowa City Public Library. It covers  transparency in public governance and why it matters from Randy Evans, Iowa Freedom of Information Council Executive Director, and Laura Belin, editor of the blog, ‘Bleeding Heartland.’
