“Climate Change: Where Faith Leads Us” is a workshop that will challenge participants to examine the environment, science and the role of faith during times of drastic change. Sponsored by the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL), the oldest registered religious lobby in the United States, Iowa Yearly Meeting of Friends (Conservative) and Scattergood Friends School and Farm, the event will take place Saturday, November 2, 2013, at Scattergood from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Scattergood is located near West Branch, Iowa, at 1951 Delta Avenue (see www.scattergood.org for directions).
Participants, as well as the general public, are invited to join Scattergood students and staff the following day, Sunday, November 3, on an Earth Walk, underscoring the urgency of addressing climate disruption. The Earth Walk will be from the school to Iowa City’s pedestrian mall. High school and college students are welcome at both events.
“Climate Change: Where Faith Leads Us” will equip participants with the science and facts behind climate disruption, explore the way faith influences how we talk to others about climate change, and provide the tools and connections needed to support local and national legislation to mitigate climate change.
Speakers include Jose Aguto, FCNL Legislative Secretary for Sustainable Energy and the Environment; Susan Guy, Director of Iowa Interfaith Power and Light; Robb Hogg, Iowa State Senator; David Osterberg, founding member and former director of the Iowa Policy Project; and Steve Shivvers, Iowa Coordinator of Citizens Climate Lobby.
The workshop fee, which includes lunch and materials, is $10 for those who pre-register by October 26. High school students and faculty who pre-register by October 26 are invited to attend at no cost. For those who do not pre-register, the fee will be $15.
To pre-register send name, address, email, telephone number and organization to Deborah Fink, fink27@gmail.com, or 222 South Russel1, Ames, Iowa 50010. The fee will be collected at the workshop.
