BAG COMMITTEE MEETING
October 10, 2013
Becky Ross, Jan Blake, Nancy Ross, Mary Kirkpatrick and Maureen Arensdorf were present.
We talked about having a presence at the Joint Council Meeting of Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty, University on October 28th at 4:00 pm. This meeting will be held in the IC Council Chambers. We need as many Grannies present as possible. Wear you hats, buttons, possibly something green. We will not be on the agenda, but we will speak during the Comment from the Public portion of the meeting. Becky contacted Rebecca Neads, who is the liaison between the Chamber of Commerce and the city governments, to see if the Chamber would be interested in taking on the challenge of reducing the use of plastic bags or at least providing some plastic bag information to Chamber members. Rebecca will get back to us before the joint council meeting.
Maureen and Becky have agreed to speak, but we could use more speakers. We are hoping to get Ellen Black from the University of Iowa’s Environmental Coalition and possibly someone from the Chamber of Commerce Environmental Sustainability Committee. Nancy will call the Chamber office to see if we could give each of the council members one of our handmade bags with a flyer about plastic bags attached and also ask about the time allowed for each speaker. Maureen will make up the flyer so if you have any specific points you think should be included please let her know. Maureen will also bring a string of plastic bags for effect.
We set Thursday, October 24th for our next sewing day. We will meet from 9:00 am till noon at the First Presbyterian Church on Rochester and then go out to lunch. This has been confirmed with the church.
We also discussed and read the letter that Marta Carson wrote to the local Hy Vee managers. We would like to encourage all Grannies to write a letter and we will provide addresses at the general meeting on October 22.
